About Italy

With a population exceeding 60,000,000 Italy is one of the most populous countries in Europe. Occupying an area of 301,000 square kilometres, she shares land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia along the Alps and contains two enclaves, Vatican City and San Marino. Italy also includes the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea - Sicily and Sardinia - both linked to the mainland by regular ferry services.

International ferry services operating in the Adriatic Sea to the north of Italy connect the ports of Venice, Ancona and Bari with destinations in Albania (Durres) and Greece (Corfu, Igoumenitsa and Patras). On Italy's south-eastern coast there are regular services from Salerno, Civitavecchia (for Rome), Liverno and Genoa serving ports in Tunis, Barcelona, Valencia and Morocco. There are also services from Italy to the French island of Corsica.

Most ferries carry a combination of both tourist and freight traffic but some are dedicated to the carriage of freight traffic only.
