About Albania

Albania is a country in Southeastern Europe. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the west, and on the Ionian Sea to the southwest. It is less than 45 miles from Italy, across the Strait of Otranto which links the Adriatic Sea to the Ionian Sea.

Albania has a diverse landscape with mountains, forests, sandy beaches and lakes.

Since the 2000's Albania's road systems have improved, most of the major roads that link the key cities have been upgraded with new single carriageways. There is a dual carriageway connecting the port city of Durrës with Tirana, Vlorë, and partially Kukës. Some of the more rural roads are however still in bad condition and care must be taken, often there is no street lighting, so drivers should be cautious when travelling at night due to the risks of unmarked road works, potholes and unlit vehicles.

There is no national recovery system, so vehicles should be self-sufficient, carrying minor repair equipment including jack, spare wheel, fan belts, wiper blades, local phrase book, first aid kit, water and overnight food when in remote areas.

Albania is said to be a fast changing country with over 73,000 British nationals visiting every year. Albania was chosen as the No.1 Destination in Lonely Planet's list of ten top countries to visit for 2011.
