Lying at the head of the Loire River estuary, Saint Nazaire is approximately 50 kilometers from Nantes, the 6th biggest city in France and is the 4th largest French port. Historically Saint-Nazaire has had a strong ship building and fishing tradition, it also played an important role during both the 1st and 2nd World Wars. During the 2nd World War, Saint-Nazaire was the site for submarine pens, some of which are still standing and have become a major tourist attraction.
