Lerwick freight ferry port is the main port of the Shetland Islands in Scotland, found more than 160 km (100 miles) off the north coast of mainland Great Britain. As the principal freight port for Shetland, Lerwick plays a vital role in the islands' commercial infrastructure. It was founded in the seventeenth century as a herring and white fish seaport, and still thrives as a fishing and ferry port. The harbour is also busy with commercial vessels supporting the offshore oil industry.
