Calvi, originally a small fishing port, has always been historically significant and is reputed to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. The freight port is located on the northwest coast of the island of Corsica, 95 km from Bastia and 24 km from L'Ile-Rousse. It has about 4,800 inhabitants.
