On the eastern edge of Andalucia lies the province of Almeria. It takes it's name from it's capital city which lies on the southern coast of the province. Almeria city itself is a pleasant and largely modern city and has a wealth of history to offer, a good selection of art galleries, museums and shops. Throughout the areas there is strong African influence.
Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians already used the anchorage of Almeria for commercial trade. The Port of Almeria, as we now know it, was planned and built in the 19th century. The works started in 1847 and it was finished in 1908.
