There are 2 important ports on the island of Minorca. The port of Mahon is situated on the east coast, at the head of a deep inlet which extends inland for 31m. It is an important harbor. The reason being the harbor at 5 km long, over 1 km at its widest point, and 15-30m deep it is one of the largest natural harbor in the world. This coupled with its location in the Mediterranean, has made it a strategic stronghold for many nations throughout history.
The second port is the small port of Ciutadella on the western side of Minorca. It lies of the eastern coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea. Historically, Ciutadella has always played a very important part in the Menorcan economy. This part of the island is the nearest point to the neighbouring island of Majorca.
