About Morocco

Located in north-west Africa, the Kingdom of Morocco has a population exceeding 32,000,000. Morocco is separated from Europe by the narrow entrance to the Mediterranean Sea at the Straits of Gibraltar. The shortest distance across the Straits is just 14.4 kms and there is an ongoing feasibility study into the construction of a bridge or tunnel between the two continents.

However, until such time as a fixed link is opened, freight companies will continue to rely on the ferry services operating into Tangiers both on the short routes across the Straits of Gibraltar from Algeciras in Spain and on the longer crossings from Barcelona and Genoa.

Ferries on the longer routes are operated principally for the benefit of freight traffic. Some services across the Straits of Gibraltar are operated for both tourist and freight vehicles but others utilise catamarans that are unsuitable for larger freight vehicles.
