About the Netherlands

Its name in French, Les Pays Bas (or the Low Countries), gives a clue as to the main geographical feature of this country. The Netherlands is a low lying country, with 25% of its area located below sea level and 50% of its land being less than one metre above sea level. The Netherlands occupies an area of nearly 42,000 square kilometres and its population numbers 16,500,000. The Netherlands' capital city is Amsterdam and the country shares land borders with just two neighbours - Belgium and Germany.

Regular ferry services operate into three Dutch ports; Rotterdam, the Hook of Holland and IJmuiden (the port for Amsterdam). Both Rotterdam and the Hook are served by regular departures from Harwich, whilst P&O Ferries operates a daily rotation between Rotterdam and Hull. IJmuiden sees a regular freight ferry service to Newcastle.

Some ferries serving the Netherlands carry a combination of both tourist and freight traffic but others are operated by dedicated freight vessels.
