About France

France is the largest west-European country with a population of 66,000,000. Mainland France shares land borders with Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Spain and Andorra. The busiest seaway in the world, the English Channel, separates France from England.

There are many ferry routes as well as the Channel Tunnel that connect France with England. Ferries from France also sail to the Republic of Ireland and across the Bay of Biscay from Saint Nazaire to Gijón in Asturias, Spain. There are also ferry services from the south or France to Corsica, Sardinia and across the Mediterranean Sea to Tunisia.

Most ferries carry a combination of both tourist and freight traffic but some are dedicated to the carriage of freight traffic only. Some services are also operated by catamarans and other high-speed craft that may not accept all types of freight vehicles.

There are more than 28,500km (17,700 miles) of national roads. Motorways bear the prefix A and national roads N.
