About Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands are located off the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain. The four largest islands are Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera. The archipelago forms an autonomous community and a province of Spain, the administrative city being Palma de Mallorca. The total population is just over 1,000,000.

The Balearic Islands benefit from regular ferry services to mainland Spain, the gateways being the cities of Barcelona and Valencia and the resort town of Dénia on the Costa Blanca. There is also a network of inter-island services, with Mallorca and Menorca both having more than one gateway.

Most ferries carry a combination of both tourist and freight traffic but some are dedicated to the carriage of freight traffic only. However, some services (especially those inter-island) are operated by catamarans and other high-speed craft that may not accept all types of freight vehicles.
